One QIGONG Uncategorized

Starting On World Qigong and Tai Chi Day, Saturday, April 25, 2020, John Will Lead A Specially Designed Morning CoronaVirus COVID-19 Qigong Session Designed To Boost Your Immune System and Lungs

The Morning Qigong Session Is Free

For the next seven days, John will be leading a free morning Qigong routine online. We are starting on Word Qigong and Tia Chi Day, Saturday, April 25, 2020. It will be a one-hour routine with movements chosen to strengthen the lungs, clear the sinuses, and boost the immune system. See Below for the starting times in your time zone and the link to join. These exercises are the perfect thing to do at home to reduce stress, keep healthy, and entertained during the coronavirus COVID-19 lockdown or Quarantine. If you are looking for things to do during the Coronavirus lockdown — nothing can be better than learning Qigong. Due to its potential for health benefits, The Harvard Medical School called Qigong and Tai-Chi “Medication in Motion.” Qigong is sort of like yoga but much simpler to perform –anyone can do it — and I truly believe that is why Qigong sees much better and quicker health results than yoga. It is simple to learn and perform and each exercise can be performed sitting or standing. It does not require a lot of hard-to-perform positions like yoga. During the free morning session, John will show how to do each exercise sitting or standing. Now, If you are sitting there thinking, what the heck is Qigong and why should I do it, then check out this other post we made about Qigong on Tuntrelife. Or, just keep reading to see the evidence explaining why Qigong is the best way to boost your immune system and lungs to help fight the COVID-19 Coronavirus.

Qigong (pronounced chee-gong, or chee-gung) is an ancient exercise that combines controlled breathing, gentle flowing body movements, and quieting the mind. Most people are familiar with Yoga Or Tai Chi. They both evolved from the same exercises known today as Qigong. So why not do the original exercise? The movements are simple and easy to remember, unlike many in Tai Chi, and they do not require strenuous poses or balancing, like in yoga. There is evidence that Qigong possibly is 10,000 years old, or older. A famous set of ancient instructions stated of Qigong that it was possible to: “Mind the body and the breath, and then clear the mind to distill the Heavenly elixir within.”

Recent research has indicated that regular practice of Qigong can offer relief for people suffering from stress and depression and that it can provide positive health benefits in the following areas: hypertensioncardiovascular diseasecancerarthritic diseasestroke rehabilitationimproved balance, and to reduce falls, and bone mineral density. As explained in more detail below there is also extensive evidence showing that Qigong has positive health benefits for the immune system.

What Happens When Your Immune System Meets A Virus?

Our immune system consists of different types of cells and molecules, such as antibodies.  The first thing our immune system does when it confronts a virus is to produce antiviral molecules, called interferons, which try and stop viruses from replicating. This is an innate response that starts immediately when the body detects an intruder like an unknown virus for the first time. The body will produce cytokines which can cause fever and tissue inflammation as cells start to die. There are also white blood cells which will get involved early on that attempt to detect infected cells and kill the cells. Next the body mobilizes white blood cells such as monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils that assess the body’s condition looking for infection and release immune hormones to prepare other cells that may subsequently become infected. Finally, the adaptive system activates, which can take several days to kick in once a virus enters the body. This system includes white blood cells such as T-cells that try to kill infected cells and B-cells that attempt to either neutralise the virus or coat them with a substance so they can be recognised by the T-cells.

The problem with the new COVID-19 Coronavirus is that it is a new virus that the body has not seen before, so it takes time for the body to create antibodies or for the adaptive immune system to learn to fight the new virus. The body can even overreact causing a “cytokine storm” where too many of these molecules are produced causing excess inflammation in the lungs resulting in more harm than good as it works to eliminate the virus.  And if matters couldn’t get any worse, early research on the COVID-19 Coronavirus suggests the antibodies produced by our body to fight this virus are not very effective at killing the virus –which is common with most viruses — and why there are so few vaccines for viral infections like HIV and many others. Thus, a vaccine may not even be an option and COVID-19 and the only option provided by Western medicine will be an approach like has been used for treating HIV by using a cocktail of many different medications to treat the symptoms, but not providing a cure.

How Qigong Can Make A Difference

So, how does Qigong help? If you have a healthy immune system, you have a greater chance of not experiencing severe health problems if you develop the COVID-19 Coronavirus. Qigong is a proven and safe way to boost the immune system quickly without the types of complications associated with starting strenuous exercises like jogging, or even Yoga, like strained or sore muscles — which can weaken your immune system when you need it strong.  Instead, it has been shown that Qigong can simultaneously enhance the somatic motor system, the sympathetic nervous system, and the parasympathetic nervous system. The enhancement of the parasympathetic nervous system differentiates Qigong from other types of exercise, and this is where the real healing benefits come in. A Study published in 2007 which evaluated whether Qigong could improve the body’s ability to respond to a Chicken Pox vaccination found that T-Cell activity increased 38% in the study group performing Qigong. This study showed that Qigong was able to boost the immune system as well as the vaccine. The study found that performing Qigong “induced an immune response that was comparable to the vaccine. ” The study’s authors suggested that Qigong may have such a strong effect on the immune system because it manages to bring exercise, relaxation, and meditation together in “one behavioral intervention.” It was believed that Qigong enhances T-cell activity by quieting the nervous system’s “fight or flight” response, which can interfere and weaken the immune system.

In study after study, Qigong has been shown to help improve the immune system, fight infection, and even kill viruses. Check out the long list of studies supporting positive health benefits from Qigong. I will mention just a few studies but the list is long. In this study, a review was done of Qigong related randomized controlled clinical trials, and retrospective case-control studies, and it was found that Qigong was able to improve both cell-mediated immunity and antibody response in the immune system. Further research was suggested to determine if the observed changes in immune parameters were sufficient to provide protection from infections. Another study showed that White blood cells increased “significantly” after Qigong training, including significant increases in lymphocyte and monocyte numbers, both of which play an important role to help the body prevent a serious bout with COVID-19 Coronavirus.

The bio-energy involved in Qigong has also been shown to kill viruses and help fight infection. Studies have also been done showing how Qigong helped strengthen health and reduce stress for chronically ill patients in China while the country was struggling with the SARS outbreak, another type of Coronavirus. Qigong has also been used to treat patients in China during the current COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. In this video, a nurse in China leads patients in Qigong exercises during the COVID-19 Coronavirus outbreak. And this video explains the role that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) (Qigong, Acupuncture, herbs, and massage make up the four parts of TCM).

If you don’t want to read a bunch of boring studies here are some videos you can check out explaining the positive health benefits of Qigong:

Here is a medical research lecture from Harvard Medical School regarding the health benefits of Qigong and Tai Chi.

Evidence-Based research To Support the Health Benefits of Tai Chi & Qigong:

Harvard researcher Dr. Herbert Benson, explains how Tai Chi and Qigong more effectively treat 60 to 90% of health issues than drug or surgical therapies.
